day evening got an “unusual” call after a driver hit what turned out to be a large elk near Conestoga Lake.
Chief Deputy Sheriff Ben Houchin on Wednesday said a vehicle along Southwest 84th Street between West Pioneers Boulevard and West Van Dorn Street hit the elk, but the woman driving the vehicle thought initially it was a large deer.

Responding deputies soon realized at the scene it was a large elk. Houchin estimated the elk weight between 550 and 600 pounds.
According to Houchin, this is the first time in his career with LSO he’s heard of a crash involving an elk, but he adds that elk are not commonly seen close to Lincoln.
Nebraska Game and Parks officials were called to help remove the elk, which was killed. The vehicle was totaled. The woman driving was not hurt.
