Buddy Walk INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — More than 3,000 people will gather Saturday at White River State Park to celebrate inclusion and raise critical funds for Indiana families affected by Down syndrome. Down Syndrome Indiana’s 29th annual Buddy Walk remains the largest and most comprehensive D own syndrome event in the state. The celebration kicks off at 9 a.m. with registration and family activities, followed by opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. “This event is about more than just raising money,” Dr. Macy Pohl, executive director of Down Syndrome Indiana, said. “It’s about showing families they’re not alone and celebrating the incredible contributions people with Down syndrome make to our communities every day.” Building connections from day one For Libby Anderson, the Buddy Walk represents a full-circle moment. When her daughter Emmy was diagnosed with Down syndrome at birth in the NICU, Down Syndrome Indiana brought a welcome packet to the hospital. “That connection from the very beginning made all the difference,” Anderson said. “Now we walk every year with about 50 people on our team because we want other families to know they have this community behind them.” Down Syndrome Indiana supports individuals with Down syndrome and their families from diagnosis through adulthood. The organization serves as a lifeline for parents navigating medical appointments, educational systems and social connections. Programs that make a difference Down Syndrome Indiana provides comprehensive support services across the state: New parent support packets delivered at diagnosis IEP consulting for families navigating special education Education programming and workshops Literacy programs designed for different learning styles Social opportunities for children, teens and adults Self-advocates groups that empower individuals with Down syndrome “These programs exist because of events like the Buddy Walk,” Pohl said. “Every dollar raised goes directly back into supporting Indiana families.” Anderson emphasized the importance of advocacy and community connection for families at any stage of their journey. “You quickly realize you’re part of something bigger,” she said. “The Buddy Walk shows Emmy and kids like her that they’re valued, celebrated and surrounded by people who believe in them.” What’s next The 29th annual Buddy Walk takes place Saturday, Oct. 3, at Celebration Plaza in White River State Park. Check-in and activities begin at 9 a.m., with opening ceremonies at 10 a.m. and the walk to follow. Registration remains open for individuals, families and teams.
