The loved ones of missing Chula Vista mother Maya Millete will have to wait more than a month to learn how much time her husband will spend in prison. In July, a jury found Larry Millete guilty of first-degree murder in her 2021 disappearance. Prosecutors said Millete killed his wife as she was p reparing to divorce him. They said they believed he drove out to a desert-area to the east of San Diego County and buried her body where no one could find it. An undated picture of Larry Maya Millete. Deputy District Attorney Christy Bowles told Judge Enrique Camarena defense attorneys had requested the continuance because it was awaiting returns from several subpoenas. Both Bowles and the judge said they didn’t have firsthand knowledge for what the subpoenas were for, and the defense didn’t offer an explanation on the record. However, Bowles indicated she’d seen media coverage that reported the subpoenas were sent to local media stations in an effort to get full videos of juror interviews that were conducted following the conviction. Despite objections from prosecution not to delay sentencing, the judge set a new date of November 2 for the new hearing. During that future proceeding, Maya’s family will likely deliver witness impact statements. First-degree murder carries a sentence of 25 years to life in prison. It will be up to the judge to decide if he’ll be allowed to be paroled after serving a minimum of 25 years. More time could potentially be added for a weapons charge that Millete pleaded guilty to after the murder trial. Millete has been locked up since late 2021.
