RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WOLO) — Following a shooting that left four people injured Sunday morning, the Richland County Sheriff’s Department is announcing the permanent closure of La Rumba nightclub on Decker Boulevard. At Tuesday’s press conference outside of the nightclub, Sheriff Leon Lott s aid deputies have been called to La Rumba an additional 83 times — with the sheriff’s department reporting constant calls from community members for noise complaints, reports of shootings, and more. Lott and a deputy chained one set of doors shut, while another deputy placed a public nuisance order on the other. That door was sprayed with bullet holes during Sunday morning’s shooting. “I know the social media people that like to criticize us will criticize us that we’re anti-club and we don’t want people to go out and have a good time. I’m all for going out and having a good time, but going out and getting shot is not having a good time. And it is my responsibility to do something about it,” says Lott. Linda Jackson is a council member for the Town of Arcadia Lakes, and also serves as Mayor Pro Tem. “And the parents who live in this area were talking about on Friday night, they had to put their children in the bathtub to keep them from being hit by stray bullets. And it’s just a horrible situation for the parents who are hard working folks just trying to take care of their families,” she says. The sheriff gave a warning to club-goers, naming ones he considers to be dangerous. “If you wanna go get shot and become a victim, these are the clubs you need to go to, because the odds of that happening are very high: First Class at 2639 Broad River Road, Chemistry Lounge at 2700 Broad River Road, Club Hush at 2768 Decker Boulevard, and Vegas Nights at 3722 River Drive,” he says, adding, “You go to those clubs, odds of you getting shot…odds of you becoming a crime victim…are very, very high.” The sheriff believes SC and Richland County need tougher laws and stricter business licenses. He promises that more clubs where shootings take place will permanently close in the near future. “I have plenty of chain. I have lots more chains. And we’re gonna use them,” he says. No arrests regarding Sunday morning’s shootings have been made at this time and the victims are reportedly in stable condition.
