CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Four-year-old Caleb Flax was killed in a shooting early Sunday morning. His family says he was in bed sleeping when Flax was shot in the head by a bullet that flew through the walls of their home on Grassy Patch Lane just before 3:00 a.m. “He was laying beside me when it hap pened and I tried to cover his body, but I guess he had already got hit,” said Caleb’s mother, Bryanna Flax. “It broke my heart. I’m just, I’m just numb right now. Like, I don’t know how to feel. I, I don’t, I’m just trying to stay strong,” she told WCCB. Police say bullets flew through at least four homes. Some of the gunshots were caught on Nest camera. Caleb was rushed to the hospital, where he died. “I’ll never get to hear ‘Papa’ again,” says Caleb’s grandfather, Bryan Beatty. “I love him to death and I’m gonna always miss him. So I really hope that something comes of this and they need to put down the guns,” says Beatty. Another woman was shot and taken to the hospital. She is expected to survive. Cars were also hit with bullets. Caleb’s family hopes someone speaks up about who pulled the trigger and why. “I feel like the snitch mentality needs to go because it’s a child,” Bryanna Flax said. “It is that simple. If you can protect somebody that killed a baby, you’re not a good person at all,” she says. The family is holding on to the fond memories of the child whose life was taken too soon by senseless gun violence. “My baby deserves justice. He deserves it,” Bryanna Flax said. “No, if, ands or buts, because he was innocent.” Beatty says, “I’m asking for the community to help me this time. I’m not asking for anything that’s out of the ordinary. I’m just asking for help bringing those to justice that did this to my grandson. I’m just asking for them to help me this time.” Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police say this is an active investigation.
