Eastbound Interstate 76, also known as the Schuylkill Expressway, will close next week as part of the $148 million Market Street Bridge project, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT). From Monday, Aug. 31, through Thursday, Sept. 3, eastbound I-76 will be closed fro m 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning as crews work to rehabilitate the bridges that carry Market Street over Amtrak and I-76, the Schuylkill River Trail, and the CSX Railroad in Center City. Officials said eastbound I-76 traffic will be detoured between the I-676 and 30th Street interchanges. During the closure, drivers will be directed to use Arch Street/30th Street, Chestnut Street, and Schuylkill Avenue. Drivers should expect delays and backups during the closure.
