There are moments when recreation becomes so much more than just fun. It becomes confidence. It becomes friendship. It becomes courage. And sometimes, it becomes a life-changing experience. That is exactly what happened when Small Champions families traveled to the National Ability Center for a week filled with adventure, inclusion and unforgettable memories. Small Champions transforms and empowers the lives of Eagle County, Colorado, youth who are challenged with a variety of cognitive and physical disabilities. From adaptive water sports and outdoor adventures to evenings spent laughing together, every experience reflected the National Ability Center’s commitment to ensuring that every individual has the opportunity to discover what is possible. Our families came home with more than great memories. They returned with new friendships, greater confidence, and countless moments where children discovered they were capable of far more than they imagined. Those are the moments that stay with you. Parents consistently described the week as exceeding every expectation. “We had such an amazing experience at NAC! The entire team was absolutely amazing and made every day so special for us,” said one parent. “Throughout the entire time they showed so much compassion, love, dedication, and patience. They truly went above and beyond to make every child and family feel welcomed, included and cared for.” The impact extended beyond the activities themselves. Families watched their children step outside their comfort zones, build relationships with staff and peers, and embrace new adventures with confidence. “My kids, Anthony and Camila, had an incredible time and couldn’t stop smiling and chatting with the entire staff,” the parent continued. “Seeing how happy and engaged they were meant so much to our family. We all had such a blast, and we’re truly grateful for such a memorable experience.” Another parent described their visit as nothing short of extraordinary. “What a dream week we had at the NAC. Everything was above and beyond what we expected—from the lovely rooms (with their weighted blankets), to all the activities, and especially the staff,” the parent said. “Everyone there was so warm and welcoming. They communicated schedules and needs clearly and were all passionate about the NAC and the mission.” Thoughtful details made a meaningful difference, including accommodations that allowed every family member to feel comfortable and supported. “The dietary accommodations were really appreciated,” the parent added. “I believe the friendships that were made with our group, kids and parents included, will last a long time. Thank you for everything!” For many families, the week was filled with what Small Champions calls Eureka moments — those powerful instances when a child realizes, “I can do this.” Whether trying a new activity, making a new friend, or simply finding the confidence to participate in something unfamiliar, these breakthroughs remind everyone why adaptive recreation matters. One parent said those moments were made possible by an exceptional team of compassionate professionals. “I wanted to give a shout out to the staff. So many wonderful people. Declan and team were outstanding. I wanted to thank Matthew, Calen, Piper, Shannon, Jeff, and the boat team, everyone. But please, a special nod to Jane, who went above and beyond to make a hard day a win for Z. So much gratitude.” These stories reflect what makes the National Ability Center so special. Every interaction demonstrated patience, encouragement and a genuine belief in each participant’s abilities. Staff members didn’t simply lead activities. They built confidence, celebrated accomplishments, and created an environment where every child and family felt seen, valued, and supported.
