A coyote that was killed by police after attacking a resident and dog in Cheltenham Township, Pennsylvania, tested positive for rabies, officials confirmed. On Friday, Aug. 21, Cheltenham Township Police warned residents of multiple reports of an aggressive coyote in the Wyncote section of the t ownship. The animal had been spotted at Curtis Dog Park as well as Hopeland Road, Washington Lane and Rock Creek Drive. Both Cheltenham Township Police and the Pennsylvania Game Commission searched for the animal. Later on Friday, police revealed the coyote was located by officers and killed after the animal attacked a person and their dog at the Curtis Dog Park. The coyote’s body was taken by the Pennsylvania Game Commission for rabies testing. On Wednesday, Aug. 26, Cheltenham Township Police revealed that the animal tested positive for rabies. If you or your pet had contact with any coyote, seek medical or veterinary care immediately. Rabies can be transmitted through contact with an infected animal’s saliva, including through bites or scratches. Pets that are not currently on their rabies vaccination are at especially high risk.
