Rashonda Lowe pleaded guilty Wednesday to the murder of Jaime Rokkett, stunning the courtroom on the first day of the trial. The plea cam after Judge Jennifer Bennett asked Lowe, “How do you plea?” Lowe replied, “Guilty.” Lowe is accused of killing Rokkett, the owner of a cookie sho p located inside the Shops at RedBird in Dallas. According to forensic investigators, Rokkett was shot at least seven times, including in the head, at his workplace on July 1, 2025. Lowe’s guilty plea means the jury will now determine Lowe’s punishment. She could face a sentence of up to life in prison. The first day of testimony was emotionally charged as prosecutors showed surveillance video from the day of the shooting. The video showed Lowe wearing a white shirt, baby blue shorts, and carrying a black purse. She was seen parking at the shopping center, walking into the Shops at RedBird, and approaching Rokkett’s cookie shop. The video shows that Lowe spent sevent minutes talking with Rokkett before walking back to her vehicle. Prosecutors told the jury Lowe spent about 35 seconds inside the vehicle before returning toward the shopping center and Rokkett’s workplace. The video showed Lowe and Rokkett continued to talk. Minutes later, prosecutors said Lowe then retrieved a gun from the black purse. Investigators said Lowe fired multiple times from only a few feet away. Surveillance video then showed Lowe jumping over the counter and continuing to shoot Rokkett. The defense, Steven LaFuente, questioned the prosecution’s characterization of the shooting, pointing to the gun’s safety mechanism and the fact that the surveillance video did not have audio. Day one of the trial also revealed more about the relationship between Lowe and Rokkett. Prosecutors said Lowe and Rokkett had previously been involved in a relationship. The jury was shown numerous text messages and phone call logs between Lowe and Rokkett. One of the messages from Lowe to Rokkett read, “It seems like we don’t want the same things in the relationship.” Months before the murder, Lowe texted Rokkett, “I am seriously considering filing a civil suit for the last seven years of psychological abuse.” The messages, call logs, and voicemails, according to prosecutors, were deleted by both Rokkett and Lowe. Rokkett, however, was married at the time of the shooting to Samantha Rokkett. The couple married on August 31, 2019, after Rokkett proposed in December 2018. Rokkett testified that she first became aware of Lowe after Lowe contacted her through Facebook years before the murder. The jury was shown a screenshot of a message Lowe sent to Samantha, claiming she was dating Rokkett since 2018. Samantha told jurors the contact eventually escalated into repeated audio and video calls, as well as calls to her cell phone. A Ring doorbell camera also showed Lowe at the couple’s home. Prosecutors pointed out that Samantha made at least four police reports about what she described as continued harassment. The earliest police report dated back to September 2022. She described the calls from Lowe as becoming increasingly aggressive. “More back-to-back calls. More aggressive calls. Threats were becoming more clear,” Samantha testified. She said Lowe told her, “I know where you live. I see you changed your license plate.” Samantha also recalled the moment she learned her husband had been killed. She testified that her brother walked up to her crying before telling her what happened. “That’s when I realized it was actually Jaime,” she said. Rokkett’s body was found on the ground, behind the cookie counter. The gun was left on the counter before Lowe ran off to her vehicle and drove away. The jury is expected to continue hearing evidence Thursday as the trial moves forward. Lowe has pleaded guilty.
