A 37-year-old man was stabbed to death on the New Haven Green Wednesday afternoon during an argument that spi lled out from the main library branch. Less than an hour later, a 42-year-old woman was stabbed in a nearby public housing tower and later died of her injuries. The two incidents were unrelated. The Green incident began just before 3 p.m. in the downstairs level of the Elm Street library building. An argument broke out between two men over whether one of them was making too much noise, according to Police Chief David Zannelli. A library security guard told them to leave the building. They did leave, then continued arguing outside. One of the men allegedly stabbed the 37-year-old man near the main stage on the east half of the Green by the corner of Temple and Elm. The above photograph shows where police blocked off that spot and put evidence markings. The stabbed man headed across the street to the bus stop, where he collapsed near the shelter. (See photo at the top of the story.) One passerby, Abidan Gomez, said he saw the man struggling and covered in blood before police taped off the corner. He subsequently died at the hospital. NHPD PHOTO Officers released photos (see above) of a “person of interest” in the stabbing seen fleeing the Green toward College and Chapel. “If you happen to know the individual please let us know,” Chief Zannelli said. City Librarian Maria Bernhey was on scene with officers and city officials offering details and reviewing video footage. She told the Independent that the library has arranged for Employee Assistance Program (EAP) counselors to be on site Thursday to offer assistance for staffers. The second stabbing Wednesday afternoon took place inside the McQueeney Towers senior/disabled public-housing facility at Orange and Audubon Streets. Police received the call at 3:26 p.m. A 40-year-old man stabbed a 42-year-old woman inside one of the apartments during a domestic argument, Chief Zannelli said. He said they were boyfriend and girlfriend. The chief said the police arrested the man and have him in custody. The woman was taken to the hospital and was in “very critical condition,” Zannelli said. “She was talking on the way. She was alert and conscious,” the chief added. “We’re praying for her.” She later died in the hospital. Wednesday’s fatal stabbings mark the city’s sixth and seventh homicides of the year so far, and come after someone shot and killed 19-year-old Chavis Goldson of New Haven and 25-year-old Lorenzo Foreman of West Haven on Judson Avenue on Aug. 4.
