Amber Gregg has always wanted her children to succeed, but now, they can add author to the list. They are the creators of I Am Loved – Soy Amado: A Bilingual Coloring Book of Affirmations. Her son Princeton is 10 years old and her daughter Pilar is 6 years old. “I’ve always wanted to create a story that shows the cultural richness of my family’s dynamic being African American and Hispanic,” Gregg said. “Not everyone gets to experience the beauty of more than one lifestyle culturally. Now that both of my kids are school age, I noticed how much they love to read and color, so it dawned on me to create this coloring book. We are big on speaking and reading words of affirmation in my home, so I wanted to create something that would be positive and uplifting for other families to read together.” Gregg said she and the children co-authored the bilingual coloring book of affirmations. Specifically for them, they were the foundation for the coloring book portion. “Every page was created with real-life examples of what my family has experienced with each other. They were the main inspiration of the affirmations and illustrations,” Gregg said. She made it clear that while she and her children are hoping to inspire other families, it’s also in the name of childhood literacy. “Reading comprehension skills are key to success in our lives. Not only do you excel further in school and later on the earlier you introduce books, but reading brings your family together. You create memories together; it forces you to slow down in such a busy world to appreciate the love and support you have at home,” Gregg said. Her hope is that this book of affirmations will also be a unique look into a child’s world. “Each page was created with love and captures the essence of real-life experiences of my family. Reading affirmations instills confidence, courage, and self-love. It’s so important to expose our children to positive and uplifting words and phrases daily. Our family is truly blessed to have been raised in an African American and Hispanic household. We wanted to share the special joy that comes from both cultures,” Gregg said.
