Kentucky voters are headed to the polls to pick party nominees in several big federal and state primary races. Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday(Ryan Van Velzer / KPR )Kentuckians across the state are making their way to the polls. Many voters in Louisville told LPM News Tuesday mornin g that voting is a civic duty.“Me as an African American, my people died trying to vote,” Patricia Watkins told LPM News after voting at Dr. Blaine Hudson Middle School in west Louisville’s Shawnee neighborhood.“So legacy is involved along with making sure the people that I think that care about my matters and the matters of my community are in office,” Watkins said.“You can’t say anything negative about the election or anything like that if you did not come out here and do what I just did, and voted, because your vote counts,” Bertha Freeman told LPM after casting her ballot. But coming out of the polling station at Butler High School in Shively, a young voter named Zay was unsure about the impact of casting her ballot. Zay declined to give her last name.Leonard Rushing “Even though I’m just one person, hopefully it counts — at least I hope it counts,” she said.Zay said things feel “fishy” at the federal level, given what she’s heard about redistricting in other states.“I don’t really know too much…I don’t have time to actually look into it,” Zay said, noting she works nights as a security guard. “But the stuff I hear about just does not feel right to me.”Zay was one of several voters LPM spoke with who like Louisville’s new nonpartisan races for mayor and Metro Council, saying it forces people to do more research on the candidates. But Leonard Rushing said voters should have candidates’ party affiliations on the ballot.“They should let you know who’s on the ticket,” Rushing said. One voter who spoke with LPM said she used ChatGPT to help her select candidates.Rochee Trowell said she put the names from her ballot into the AI chat bot. Rochee Trowell“I just let them give me information, their pros, their cons, what the struggles may be for them, and then I just went from there,” Trowell said. She said the chat bot provided links to candidates’ personal websites that she could click through for more information.Polls close at 6 p.m. in Kentucky. A valid photo IDs is required to vote. You can find your polling location and candidate information at LPM’s Voter guide. ...read more read less
