Anisa Mohamed has sold Kismayo Kitchen, the Somali American restaurant she owned with her late husband, Ahmed Omar, to another husband-and-wife team: Abbas Mohamed (no relation) and Mashaer Ebaid. Abbas Mohamed, 50, and Ebaid, 40, bought the small counter-service spot at 505 Riverside Avenue in Bur lington in February for an undisclosed sum. Anisa Mohamed, 31, has been working with the couple to gradually transition the business. The new owners said they expect to add dishes from their native Sudan — such as eggplant salad, okra and greens with beans — to Kismayo’s menu of longtime favorites. The restaurant will continue to serve solely halal meats and do catering. Kismayo Kitchen’s new owners, Abbas Mohamed and Mashaer Ebaid. The restaurant became known for serving both Somali dishes, such as coconut chicken stew with rice, and all-American classics, including Philly cheesesteaks. Omar died unexpectedly in his sleep on August 13, 2023, at the age of 36. Anisa Mohamed reopened the restaurant three months later, running it with the help of family and friends. Now, the mother of two young daughters said she is completing her studies to become a pharmacist. Abbas Mohamed met Omar, a respected and beloved member of the local African diaspora community, after he and Ebaid moved to Vermont four years ago. “We used to hang out and cut meat” at a local halal market, he said. The couple already own Sudanese Halal Market, which they opened at 12 Malletts Bay Avenue in Winooski earlier this year. Their nephew, Yasin Mohamed, has been working at Kismayo and will manage the business with Ebaid. “He knows everything,” Anisa Mohamed said. Learn more.
