San Jose police arrest 13 at illegal gambling dens

(KRON) -- This year the San Jose Police Department has investigated multiple shootings and homicides linked to illegal after-hours clubs, bars, and gambling dens throughout the city, police said.
A double homicide unfolded inside a secret gambling establishment on Santa Clara Street in March, poli
ce said. Two men were shot to death, and their suspected killer was arrested this week.Illegal gambling establishments attract violence, fraud, and organized criminal activity, Sgt. Jorge Garibay said.
"Multiple units within the Department’s Special Operations Division, along with the Vice Unit, spearheaded a citywide enforcement effort aimed at identifying and dismantling these illegal operations," Garibay wrote.
On Tuesday, teams of officers arrested 13 suspects and seized 45 operational gaming machines while serving search warrants simultaneously at the following locations:
• A commercial building in the 1800 block of Alum Rock Avenue• A residence in the 4300 block of Alum Rock Avenue• A commercial building in the 3800 block of Monterey Road• A residence in the 200 block of Senter Road
"Illegal gambling operations are not victimless crimes. They create environments where violence thrives and put innocent lives at risk," Police Chief Paul Joseph wrote in a statement. "This operation reflects our commitment to aggressively pursue those who operate outside the law and threaten the safety of our neighborhoods."
SJPD is warning the public that homeowners and commercial building owners can face administrative fines of up to $500,000 for allowing illegal gambling operations on their property.
