SAN MATEO, Calif. (KRON) -- Neighbors in San Mateo are fighting for change after a father and his two children were hit by a car while crossing the street. The family and community members were at the city council meeting Monday night, demanding action. A father who was in the ICU is back home wit h his two children on Monday night. All are recovering after they were struck almost two weeks ago. City officials say the primary collision factor was "failure to yield to a pedestrian at a crosswalk" by a 17-year-old driver. Their family is now joined by the community, urging the city council to act now on safety improvements at a dangerous intersection. SoCal-based Vietnamese coffee shop opens first Bay Area location Brandon Madrigal and his sister were joined by community members outside San Mateo City Hall on Monday night. They are calling for safety improvements at the intersection where their father and two siblings were hit by a car. "I was at home when it happened. I rushed to the scene, all I see was my dad on the floor and two siblings crying in pain," Madrigal said. The crash happened on March 28th at North Delaware and State streets. The family was walking in the crosswalk. Their father, Ramon Sandoval, was released from the hospital on Saturday after spending several days in the ICU. Sandoval suffered from internal bleeding, six broken ribs, a dislocated shoulder, and a leg injury that required surgery. Madrigal says it's going to be a long road to recovery for not only his dad, but his eight-year-old brother and 16-year-old sister. "My brother had a fractured skull and cerebral bleeding on both sides, so he's under medication for seizures, so he doesn't get any in his sleep," Madrigal said. "My sister, she had minor bruising and a lot of pain, and she's taking pain medications. People who live near this intersection say for years they've feared crossing it, wondering if a car will hit them. Especially at night," said Antonio, who lives near the intersection. Neighbors voiced their concerns to the city council at Monday's meeting. North Delaware Street is on San Mateo County's high-injury network. From 2014 to 2020, there were 18 crashes. Four were deadly. Mike Swire with Move San Mateo says warnings about this intersection have been ignored. "I emailed them about the specific dangers of Delaware in June 2023. Why was there no action when a driver hit a teen in this exact location 2 years ago? I'll tell you why. It's a total lack of leadership from our leadership in San Mateo," Swire said. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with police. The family is still waiting for the police report. Officials say impaired driving did not play a role. While street safety improvements are on the city’s radar, no specific plans have been announced. Neighbors say they want action -- like flashing crosswalk lights -- in the coming weeks, not months. ...read more read less
