A new chapter in the story of Princess Tiana, Disney’s first Black princess, is being brought to life through a vibrant new museum experience that could eventually make its way to Atlanta. All photos courtesy of Walt Disney Walt Disney Imagineering has partnered with The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis to debut “Tiana’s Joyful Celebration,” the first-ever museum exhibition dedicated entirely to the beloved character from Disney’s 2009 animated film The Princess and the Frog. The interactive exhibit opened on March 7 and invites visitors to step into Tiana’s world through music, culture, and community rooted in New Orleans traditions. The immersive exhibition is designed to engage guests of all ages through hands-on activities and colorful environments inspired by the city that shaped Tiana’s story. Visitors can join the Bayou Community Band, learn the moves of traditional second line dances through guided tutorials, and explore the vibrant rhythms and cultural traditions that define New Orleans. The experience also features the voices behind some of the film’s most beloved characters, including Tony Award-winning actress Anika Noni Rose, the voice of Princess Tiana, and Jenifer Lewis, who voiced Mama Odie. Both performers are also featured in Disney’s Tiana’s Bayou Adventure attraction at Walt Disney World and Disneyland. Beyond the magic of the film, the exhibit also honors the real-life inspiration behind the character, legendary New Orleans chef Leah Chase, the late owner of the iconic Dooky Chase’s Restaurant. Chase’s restaurant served as a cultural gathering place for civil rights leaders and helped inspire the hardworking, entrepreneurial spirit that defines Princess Tiana. Stella Chase, Leah Chase’s daughter and a consultant to Walt Disney Imagineering, attended the exhibit’s opening to celebrate her mother’s lasting legacy. For many visitors, the exhibit represents more than a Disney story — it highlights the cultural traditions, music and foodways that shape Black heritage in New Orleans. After its debut in Indianapolis, “Tiana’s Joyful Celebration” will travel to museums across the United States over the next five years. While future locations have not yet been announced, the traveling exhibit could eventually stop in Atlanta, offering local families the chance to experience Tiana’s inspiring story up close. Princess Tiana has become an important cultural figure since The Princess and the Frog premiered, representing perseverance, entrepreneurship, and the power of community, themes that continue to resonate with audiences across generations. More information about the exhibit is available through The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis.
