LEXINGTON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) – Fayette County Public Schools is considering extending the school year into June to make up for recent snow days. During a board meeting Tuesday night, members discussed the district’s current calendar, which has the school year scheduled to end on June 3. A final decision is expected after spring break. District leaders say the school system has experienced significant disruptions this winter, using 10 snow days, two delayed starts and four non-traditional instruction days since a major storm impacted the area in January. Make-up days are already scheduled for March 20 and April 13. Officials say students may also be asked to spend longer days in the classroom this year. Under Kentucky Department of Education requirements, schools must provide at least 170 school days and 1,062 instructional hours each year.
