With the 2026 Milan Cortina Games now at its conclusion, it’s time to look ahead to the next Winter Olympics. Prior to this year’s Milan Cortina dual location, the last time Europe hosted the Winter Games was in 2006 — also in Italy. That year, it was Turin that served as the primary locati on. In four years time, the attention will stay in Europe once again, but the Winter Games are moving northwest to a border country. The Olympics are organized every four years, so the next Winter Games will take place in 2030. The Opening Ceremony is set for Feb. 1, with the Closing Ceremony on Feb. 17. Where will the next Winter Olympics be? The 2030 Olympics will be hosted in the French Alps. The games will officially be known as the 2030 French Alps Olympics or French Alps 2030. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) nominated the French Alps as its preferred candidate on Nov. 29, 2023, then approved the bid during the 142nd IOC Session in Paris on July 24, 2024. Where are the French Alps? The French Alps are a portion of the Alps mountain range that stand within France in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur regions. The Alps also extends to Italy and Switzerland. Which venues will be used at the 2030 French Alps Olympics? While the location for the Opening Ceremony has not been announced, the Closing Ceremony is planned for the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, a famous and public coastline walk. Such a location and style for the ceremony would be an Olympic first, though similar to the 2024 Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony where athletes were introduced on boats along the Seine. The nation hosted the first ever Winter Olympics in 1924.
