MOUNT VERNON, Ky. (ABC36 NEWS NOW) — A commercial structure fire caused extensive damage to a county maintenance garage in Rockcastle County Tuesday afternoon, according to fire officials. The Mount Vernon Fire Department was dispatched around 3:33 p.m. Saturday to reports of white smoke near t he County Road Department maintenance garage. When crews arrived, they found the building actively burning and upgraded the call, requesting additional resources. Fire departments from Livingston, Brodhead, Brindle Ridge, and Western Rockcastle responded to assist, along with tanker support. Firefighters initially made an interior attack but were forced to switch to defensive operations after a partial roof collapse. Officials say crews used an estimated 67,000 gallons of water during the response, which lasted several hours. The fire caused severe structural damage to the building. One firefighter was transported by EMS to Rockcastle Regional Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including Rockcastle EMS, Mount Vernon Police, Kentucky State Police, the Kentucky State Fire Marshal’s Office, and federal agents with the ATF. Utility crews from Kentucky Utilities and Jackson Energy also responded. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
