The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia celebrated a milestone on Wednesday as the hospital lifted the final beam for its upcoming Roberts Children’s Health expansion into place.
The new expansion — made possible through a $125 million gift from Comcast CEO Brian Roberts, his wife, Aileen
and their family — will be over 20 stories high and have more than 30 procedure and imaging rooms for patients.
When complete, it will be the tallest medical building in West Philly.

Along with the construction of the new expansion, the gift — the largest ever donation in the hospital’s 170-year history — will help afford a revitalization of the children’s hospital, as well.
On Wednesday, crews lifted the final beam for the new structure into place, marking a milestone for construction as the new complex takes shape.
“We are so grateful to be in a position to think this way,” said Roberts, noting that his entire family took pride in being involved in the project. “For us, this is a beyond proud and exciting moment.”
Roberts was joined during the ceremony by Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker who discussed the legacy of hospital and what the expansion would mean to the children and families who will use it for many years to come.
“I want you to remember this as not just an addition to our iconic skyline, but a new front door for world-class pediatric care right here in our city,” the mayor said.
The new expansion is set to include over 700 completely private rooms for patients with, what officials said, would include advanced integrated technology that will link each patient to their care team with access to test results and information to their treatment plans.
For families at CHOP, officials said, this new building will offer spaces for fitness, meditation, entertainment, mental health support and quiet rooms for remote work among other amenities.
The new expansion is expected to be complete in 2028.
Note: Brian Roberts is the Chairman and CEO of Comcast which owns NBC10 Philadelphia.
