People across Philly region head to stores to stock up before the big storm
Jan 21, 2026
It looks like the Philadelphia area will get snow for the second weekend in a row.
But, just how much we will see is – both literally and figuratively – up in the air as things could change significantly between Wednesday and Saturday evening when the National Weather Service expects the sno
wfall to begin.
NBC10’s First Alert Weather team says to expect snow in the region but just how much is unclear because it’s still too early to determine the path of the weekend storm.
The National Weather Service expects a “significant storm” to impact the region from Saturday through Sunday night – potentially into Monday – bringing with it “several inches of snowfall.”
This could amount to the region seeing six or more inches of snow this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
In order to prepare for the potential storm, communities throughout the region are preparing ahead of this weekend.
On Wednesday morning, NBC10’s Neil Fischer was in Plymouth Meeting, Montgomery County, to see how preparations were going.
He found the municipality recently got a new shipment of salt, a much needed resource after a storm over the past weekend brought snow, freezing rain and ice to the region.
PennDOT, however, has plenty of salt and, officials said, they plan on helping support communities once they see how much the potentially storms impact the community this weekend.
Also before the storm, residents throughout the region are rushing to buy snowblowers or get their snowblowers fixed.
With several days to go before the storm, some stores are already running low on new snowblowers and mechanics are working nonstop to repair snowblowers for customers.
“We are taking them as they come in,” said Anthony Petruccelli, of Suburban Lawn and Equipment in Stanton, Del. “So, if you bring a repair we will have it done and turned around to you in a day or two. They are getting prioritized. We have five full time mechanics doing nothing but snowblowers right now.”
People are rushing to the store for hand warmers, gloves, scrapers, sleds, portable heaters and even snow shovels.
“It’s hard to keep everything in stock but we have a lot in inventory,” Louis Holod, of Holod’s Hardware Store in the Lafayette Hill section of Philadelphia, said.
Grocery stores are getting busier as well.
“They are shopping what they need and we try to get everything they’re looking for,” Jose Gomez, of the Juniata Supermarket, said.
Prepare you car for winter weather
Mechanics are preparing for a surge in calls from customers ahead of this weekend’s snow storm.
One mechanic in South Jersey, Rocco Mignogna said there are some basic steps you can do to stay safe on the roads and to prevent snow damage.
“Definitely want to keep an eye on your fluid levels, like engine oil and antifreeze. If it’s low on coolant, it could possibly cause other problems because things will freeze and crack,” Mignogna explained.
Extreme cold temperatures can affect your car battery so Mignogna said that you can go to your mechanic to have them check it for you.
Here’s a checklist to make sure your car is ready for winter weather:
Check your battery
Check your tire pressure
Replace old windshield wipers
Top off any of your car fluids
And, if you’re looking to clean the snow off of your windshield, you should not rely on your wiper blades alone, Mignogna warned. Replacing a wiper transmission can cost anywhere from $100 to $400.
