Several business owners in San Francisco announced a lawsuit Tuesday against PGE in response to December’s massive blackout. Following the blackout, which left some 130,000 customers across much of San Francisco without power the weekend before Christmas, the utility announced automatic credits of $2,500 for businesses and $200 for residents. Those impacted by the outages argue the credits issued by the utility aren’t enough given the amount of business lost during the busy holiday period. Tina Zheng, owner of Irving Seafood Market, was among the hundreds of business owners across the city who were left trying to figure out what to do during and after the outages. In the end, she lost thousands of dollars of live fish, crab, lobster and chilled wagyu beef – all popular Christmas meal staples in her community. She said she filed a claim with PGE before Christmas but only recently received a response. “A couple days ago, maybe three or four days ago, they just replied to my email saying, ‘Oh, can you give me more detailed information?'” Zheng said. Kopp said he expects the lawsuit to be filed next week. He said he expects about 50 businesses will be part of it, but more can join later if they need to. In an emailed response to NBC Bay Area’s questions about PGE reimbursements after the blackout, a utility spokesperson said the company has received 2,439 claims so far. The spokesperson said about 70% of those were resolved within about 13 days and others should be resolved within 30 days. The spokesperson did not reply to follow-up questions asking for further details on the amounts that have been paid out so far and offered no comment on the planned lawsuit. ...read more read less
