SANTA ANA —The No. 1 national ranking for the Ontario Christian girls basketball team was on life support Saturday afternoon.
But there was still a pulse.

Despite trailing by 12 points with less than four minutes remaining, the Knights rallied to force overtime and went on to beat No. 3-ranked Archbishop Mitty 96-87 in double overtime as part of the Kay Yow Showcase at Mater Dei High School.
Junior Kaleena Smith scored 11 of her game-high 50 points in the second overtime, the final 11 points of the game for the Knights.
Tatianna Griffin scored on a jumper in the first few seconds of the second overtime and Ontario Christian never trailed again.
The Knights trailed 73-61 when Mitty’s McKenna Woliczko made two free throws with 4:08 remaining in regulation, on which Smith committed her fourth foul. Mitty had led by as many as 13 points early in the fourth quarter.
The Knights still trailed 78-74 after a Wolizcko jumper with 43 seconds let, but Ontario Christian scored on a 10-foot jumper by Griffin (20 points, 18 rebounds) with 30 seconds left, then Smith made two free throws with 4.7 seconds left to tie the game 78-78 and sent it to overtime.
“I was encouraging my teammates that the game was not over,” said Smith of the rally late in regulation. “Going into the fourth quarter, we still had 8 minutes left and that’s a lot of time for us. (I was trying) to bring that energy for us because we truly didn’t have it for the (first) three quarters. I feel like we picked up our defensive intensity … it was showing people why we’re No. 1.”
In overtime, it was a basket by Mitty’s Maliya Hunter with 1:17 remaining (although she missed a free throw for a 3-point play) that tied the score 83-83 and sent the game to a second overtime.
“This game meant so much, because this time last year, they absolutely annihilated us,” Ontario Christian coach Aundre Cummings said. “We played them at the (Nike) TOC. They were so incredibly focused and so disciplined. I learned how to be a better coach that day. This one felt really amazing because everyone was present.”
Ontario Christian (20-0) entered the game ranked No. 1 in the nation by MaxPreps, while Mitty (12-2) is ranked No. 3. The No. 2 team is Bishop McNamara of Maryland, the only other team to beat Mitty this season. Ontario Christian plays Bishop McNamara as part of the Hoop Hall Classic in Massachusetts this Friday.
Ontario Christian actually played Mitty (the CIF State Open Division runner-up) twice last season. The first time was a 59-34 Mitty win just before Christmas and the second was a 61-44 Ontario Christian win just after New Year’s.
But in the second game, Mitty’s star forward Wolicko suffered a season-ending knee injury and Cummings doesn’t even consider that game a win for the Knights. Only recently did Woliczko return to playing. Woliczko, who is committed to Iowa, led Mitty with 25 points and 15 rebounds Saturday.
“McKenna played lights out,” Cummings said. “Give her a lot of credit. To come back from an ACL injury and perform like that, she’s an amazing player.”
The game marked the fourth 50-point game of Smith’s career and the second this season.
Ontario Christian was out-shot from the field in the game: 42.5 percent to 37.5 percent, but the Knights made up for it was a 52-44 rebounding edge and made 23 of 25 free throws compared to just 16 of 28 for Mitty.
Ontario Christian also got 16 points and eight rebounds from Dani Robinson, including five points in the final two minutes of regulation.
Ontario Christian battled through foul trouble. In addition to Smith, who never picked up that fifth foul, Layia King and Skylah Archer fouled out.
