Recent San Diego rainfall drowns historical records
Jan 06, 2026
It never rains in Southern California.
That’s only if you don’t count the nearly EIGHT inches of rain San Diego has gotten since Oct. 1, which is more than double what the region has typically seen by this point in a normal season by this point.
Or how about the 3.10 inches of rain that’
s fallen in San Diego so far in 2026, the most rain ever for the first five days of January? As in, since historical records began being kept back in 1939 at the San Diego Airport. So, nearly a century of record-keeping.
What about the fact that New Year’s Day alone had more rain than San Diego normally gets for the entire month of January — and was the 14th rainiest day in San Diego’s history?
Then there’s this: In the first three months of the season, San Diego has gotten more rain (7.88 inches) than all of last season (5.07 inches).
