Dec 30, 2025
The Union added another body to the defensive mix Tuesday by acquiring the rights to Finn Sundstrom.
Sundstrom arrives via a transfer from USL Championship club North Carolina FC, whose academy the North Carolina native came through. The Union acquired Sundstrom’s MLS rights from D.C. United in ex
change for the Union’s first-round pick in the 2028 MLS SuperDraft.
Financial terms of the transfer were not disclosed.
Sundstrom arrives on a contract through 2028 with two club option years.
The 19-year-old stands 6-foot, 170 pounds. He made 27 league appearances for NCFC last year, with a goal and an assist. In all competitions, he played 33 games and 2,671 minutes. He signed as a homegrown in 2024 and debuted on Sept. 8, 2024.
Sundstrom was nominated for USL Championship Young Player of the Year and was called into the U.S. Under-20s in August.
“Finn is a young versatile defender who aligns well with our playing philosophy,” Union coach Bradley Carnell said in a press release. “At just 19 years old, he has demonstrated the toughness and mentality we value at the Union, as well as the ability to adapt to different styles of play. We look forward to continuing his development.”
Sundstrom joins a rebuilding center back corps after the trade of Jakob Glesnes to LA Galaxy earlier this month. Olwethu Makhanya is the reigning veteran, having not played a game before last season’s breakout campaign. Sundstrom joins fellow teenager Neil Pierre in the ranks, with Nathan Harriel shifting over from right back as an option.
