(KRON) – Philanthropist MacKenzie Scott has donated $50 million to a university in the East Bay. Cal State East Bay announced the record-breaking donation – the single largest in the university’s history – on Thursday, calling it a “historic milestone.”
Cal State East Bay, the first Bay
Area university to receive funds from Scott, deemed the donation a “transformative investment in its mission to advance student success and regional impact.”
Cal State East Bay President Cathy Sandeen said she was “speechless,” over the donation.

“This gift is truly transformational,” she added. “It will help us grow, not just now, but into the future. I am tremendously grateful.”
Scott’s philanthropic approach, according to the university, centers on “recognizing organizations doing meaningful work and empowering them with rare and powerful opportunity to sustain, strengthen and expand their impact.”
The billionaire philanthropist’s team selected Cal State East Bay following what the school called a “rigorous review of the university’s multi-year impact, financial stewardship and leadership.”
“This recognition is a testament to President Sandeen’s vision and unwavering dedication to the students and the community we serve,” said Foundation Board President Evelyn Buchanan.
“Cal State East Bay – and our hard-working students – are finally getting the recognition and credit they deserve, and in such a big way,” Sandeen added.
Scott’s donation will be used to strengthen the university’s endowment and long-term capacity, the school said.
