STAFFORD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Both a mother and her small child are dead after state police say an active-duty U.S. Marine crashed into their car while driving drunk in Stafford County early Friday morning. The crash took place just before 2 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 6 along Interstate 95 North in the area of Courthouse Road, according to Virginia State Police (VSP). Investigators believe 25-year-old active-duty Marine Malik J. Thomas of Fredericksburg was driving his Dodge Charger at a high rate of speed when he hit a Nissan Rogue from behind. The Rogue then went off the left side of the interstate and flipped. Three people -- whom Stafford County Commonwealth's Attorney Eric Olsen identified as a married couple and their child -- were in the Rogue at the time of the crash. The husband, who was driving the Rogue, is still being treated for his serious injuries. Thomas was not hurt, though three passengers in his vehicle had minor injuries. Currently, he faces three charges: two counts of aggravated manslaughter and one count of driving while under the influence of alcohol (DWI). According to Olsen, Thomas' blood alcohol content (BAC) was .17 -- more than twice the legal limit of .08. No additional information is available as of the time of reporting.
