Krystal Goodner joined LPM as All Things Considered host in October.(Justin Hicks / LPM)By now hopefully you’ve heard Krystal Goodner hosting All Things Considered on 89.3 WFPL. Here’s a little about Goodner who can be heard weekdays from 4-6 p.m.Goodner is a journalist, broadcaster and storyte ller with nearly two decades of experience in television, radio and community engagement. A familiar voice across the Louisville region, she previously served as a reporter and weekend morning anchor at WDRB and spent a decade in radio at WLOU. Goodner lives in Jeffersonville, Indiana, and is a graduate of Indiana University Southeast with a degree in multimedia journalism. This interview has been edited for brevity and clarity. Why did you want to get into television and radio?I grew up during the talk show boom of the '80s and was fascinated by the power of conversation. I loved watching someone with a microphone connect with people and uncover their stories. I've always been inquisitive, wanting to know the rest of the story. As a little girl, I even drew my own talk show on paper and entertained myself for hours pretending to be the host. Barbara Walters, Oprah Winfrey and radio personality Delilah were some of my biggest influences. Each had a unique way of connecting with people, making them feel comfortable enough to open up and share their stories. I loved that! Here's something else. I used to dislike my voice. The women in my family have naturally deep, powerful voices. My grandmother had one, and family stories say my great-grandmother's booming voice could practically shake the church walls when she sang. In sixth grade, my teacher, Mr. Bowden, changed how I heard myself. On my birthday, during his daily "This Day in History" lesson, he announced, "On this day, a woman with a golden voice was born, and her voice would go on to change the world." He helped me recognize something special in a voice I once wanted to change. Today, that same voice is my livelihood. I wish I could find him just to say thank you. What's your favorite part of the job so far? The people! I've loved getting to know the talented, hardworking creatives behind Louisville Public Media. There's a genuine passion for storytelling here. I'm also enjoying learning a different side of radio, transitioning from a music format to news and talk, while still having opportunities to report. This position brings together everything I've done throughout my career as a producer, anchor, reporter and radio host. It feels like all the pieces have come together at just the right time. I call it a divine opportunity! Are you watching any TV shows or reading any books you'd recommend? When I have time to sit down and watch something, I'm usually drawn to documentaries. I recently enjoyed the ones about Lorne Michaels, the creator of "Saturday Night Live," and Mike Tyson. I'm also a podcast and audiobook lover. I enjoy Mayim Bialik's "Breakdown" podcast (yes, Blossom for my '90s kiddos) and "The Diary of a CEO." Right now, I'm listening to "Backtalker" by Kimberlé Williams Crenshaw, who shares how her life experiences shaped her work in civil rights advocacy. She's also the scholar who introduced the concept of intersectionality. What would people be surprised to learn about you? I have a fraternal twin sister. And despite my outgoing personality and career behind the microphone, I'm naturally shy and a homebody. I love being home!Pineapple on pizza: Yes or no, and why? Absolutely NOT! My sister loves it, but I'm a pepperoni pizza girl. Nothing more, nothing less. Friday is pizza night in our house, a tradition my mother started when I was a child that I've carried into adulthood. My husband and I love trying different pizza places, but my order rarely changes. Keep it simple and keep the pineapple away from my pizza! ...read more read less
