Election night was supposed to be about one thing: just how badly voters had turned on Donald Trump’s party. But for a few White House reporters, the stranger story began after the midterm tsunami brought in a Democratic wave. And once again, the paper trail leads back to Natalie Harp, his 35-year-old aide who stays close by. White House aide Natalie Harp has fueled months of speculation about her access to President Donald Trump. (Photo by Kent NISHIMURA / AFP via Getty Images) Harp has already inspired protest signs, late-night sketches and endless whispers about how much access one assistant should have. But what reporters noticed this week suggests her reach has quietly moved into far more personal territory. Trump Has a Bizarre Explanation for Republican Election Losses, Then Makes a Promise Nobody Saw Coming ‘Seriously’: Melania’s Team Finally Confronts Steamy Whispers About Trump and Natalie Harp — But One Bombshell Remark Sends the Gossip Into Overdrive Trump has long been known for picking up his own cell when journalists dial. He goes straight into firing off quotes on the spot, no middleman required. And on Nov. 3, there was plenty to ask him about. Democrats flipped control of both the House and the Senate, picking up Senate seats in places like Texas, Kansas and South Carolina, according to NPR. As the damage came into focus, Politico global anchor Dasha Burns decided to put that habit to the test live on the outlet’s election-night stream, phone in hand and colleagues gathered around the table. Trump did eventually come on the line, and he arrived with an excuse ready. He claimed that if he had been on the ballot, “we would have won it all very easily.” When Burns reminded him he had told supporters to vote as if he were on the ballot, he waved it off, saying voters “didn’t like the candidates in most cases.” The spin was classic Trump. But it wasn’t what had other reporters talking the next morning. That honor went to the few seconds before he ever said a word. NewsNation’s Kellie Meyer was one of the first to point it out. In a post on X, she said she had noticed a change over the previous 36 hours, one that broke sharply with how the president usually operates. “Previously he would just answer himself,” she wrote. Then she explained what she meant. When she called Trump on Monday, Meyer said, a woman answered asking who it was, and Trump couldn’t talk. The same thing, she added, had just played out on Politico’s livestream. Sure enough, before Trump said a word to Burns, someone else picked up. “Hi, may I ask who’s calling?” a woman asked, according to Mediaite. Only after Burns identified herself, and a short pause, did the president take over. So who was on the other end? Andrew Feinberg, The Independent’s White House correspondent, put a name to the voice. “Natalie Harp is screening @realDonaldTrump’s phone calls,” he posted on X, pitching it as one sign of how badly things were going inside the White House. That was all the internet needed. “Who elected her?” one person asked. Another went further, writing, “She controls the Oval,” before adding, “It’s President Harp!” Others went for laughs. “He’s got a new phone and new number. Gave his old one to Natalie,” one user joked, while another joked, “When I call she answers but only breathes on the line before he picks up.” Not everyone saw a scandal, though. “Don’t presidents have someone screening their calls?” one defender asked. Fair question. But few call screeners come with Harp’s résumé. Known as Trump’s “human printer” for handing him stacks of flattering articles, she recently moved her workspace into his private dining room just off the Oval Office, the same room where he watches TV and makes his calls, The New York Times reported. Her determination to stay within earshot isn’t new. Author Michael Wolff has claimed she once slept in a locker room at Trump’s Bedminster club so she could respond to his calls faster. That closeness has fed months of chatter about who gets to Trump, and who has to go through Harp first. Even Melania Trump’s camp has been forced to address the whispers, and cameras once caught Harp making a bold move just seconds after the first lady left her seat. Jimmy Kimmel has turned it all into recurring material, with his wife playing a clingy “Natalie” on his show. Now, it seems, the real one has added switchboard operator to her job description, and getting to the president means getting past her first.
