CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Chesterfield County School Board member-elect Christina Brady believes the board and county officials ought to prioritize aging public school buildings after Chesterfield voters narrowly approved a 1% sales tax bump to fund school construction. "With the votes bei ng as close as they are, that tells me our voters are conflicted, and they're going to need us to make sure that we're doing the things that we said we're doing and that we're getting things done," Brady, who has been chosen to serve the Clover Hill district, said. Brady tells 8News an estimated $65 to 70 million in annual revenue may end up in Chesterfield's pockets. After hearing from residents and the county hosting town halls, Chesterfield officials will likely tackle six proposed main projects, including putting an end to kids learning in over 200 trailers across the county. "The one we talk about is the new Midlothian Middle School -- it's over 100 years old," Brady said. "There's a lot that needs to be resolved in the building. We need a new elementary school in the Dale area. There are more trailers in Dale than any other precinct in Chesterfield. Kids should not feel like they're going to school surrounded by trailers instead of being in a building." Other proposed projects include building a campus addition to Thomas Dale High School, a gym addition to L.C. Bird High School and a new elementary school serving students in the Midlothian and Clover Hill school board districts. Chesterfield County Public Schools will also likely have to address an estimated $850 million in maintenance over the next 10 years, according to Brady. "We need to get in front of that maintenance, and that will ultimately save us money in the long run," she said. Brady tells 8News that she'll be sworn in before the end of the year. She'll complete the term once belonging to school board member Dot Heffron, who stepped down after making controversial online statements about the Turning Point USA activist Charlie Kirk and his assassination in 2025. ...read more read less
