Mom of NYC runner stabbed on way to meet her dad says young woman has died
Nov 03, 2026
The mother of the 28-year-old runner found stabbed in the neck on a bike path in Brooklyn just two days before the NYC Marathon she was training for says her daughter has died.
Yasira Suarez confirmed her daughter, Katie Suarez, passed Monday night.
The attack happened as she ran along Shore
Parkway in Bath Beach on Friday night. Authorities believe it was random. A task force has been established to solve the case.
Police said stabbing victim Katie Suarez remained in grave condition Sunday night. Police shared a photo of her in hopes of gaining tips in the search for her attacker.
No details have been made publicly available regarding a potential suspect. The NYPD urges anyone who saw unusual activity near the running and bike path or the nearby Belt Parkway to help investigators.
Dozens of NYPD officers have been deployed across a stretch of the path, which became an extended crime scene. Detectives also released a photo of Suarez to the public for the first time.
Suarez had been coordinating a meet up with her parents for a run Friday night along the Shore Park Greenway when detectives said she got stabbed in the neck twice. Authorities believe it was a random attack.
Investigators say her father found her after she failed to meet up to continue the run.
Collecting video around the crime scene has been challenging. A special police task force searched by air, land and sea, with divers searching the waters, as a K-9 unit looked for evidence on the ground.
The incident is eerily similar to another random attack in New York City a decade ago. Karina Vetrano went for a run in Howard Beach in 2016; hours later, her father found her dead in Spring Creek Park. The medical examiner ruled her death a strangulation. Her attacker was arrested six months later, was tried and convicted.
“You need people, people that saw something, people that heard something. The more notoriety, the better chance you will have of solving it,” said Vetrano’s father, Phil Vetrano, who offered his assistance in any way to Suarez’s family. “If you need someone to talk to, you can contact me. I am probably the only person who can honestly say I know what you’re going through.”
Kenny appealed to drivers who were on the Belt Parkway on Friday night, noting that traffic slows near the site of the attack.
“Anybody that was on the Belt Parkway Friday night,” he said, pointing to area where traffic slows down, “it works for us.”

Investigators want to hear from anyone who noticed something out of the ordinary less than 40 feet off the Belt Parkway, either Friday night or in recent weeks. Police also were looking for any dashcam footage from rideshare or app-based vehicles that were in the area Friday night.
The area where the attack occurred is more remote, giving the NYPD less surveillance video to work with. Police were using license plate readers to identify drivers around when Suarez was stabbed.
