The Valkyries are champions after defeating the Atlanta Dream in a hard-fought Game 7 at Ballhalla. Finals MVP Gabby Williams did her best Steph Curry impression, hitting a handful of clutch three-pointers late to help the Valkyries win a title just two years into the franchise’s existence. As the
Chronicle reports, a sold-out crowd at Chase Center aka Ballhalla aka Boohalla given Game 7 fell on Halloween was there to witness the Golden State Valkyries beat the Atlanta Dream 68-63 in a tense affair that wasn't decided until the final minutes. It was anchored by a scintillating performance from forward Gabby Williams, who broke the WNBA record for most points scored in a half in a postseason game with 28, for a total of 30 on the night. With confetti falling from the rafters, Williams was crowned Finals MVP, capping a magical season for a franchise that did not even exist three years ago. It was also a massive coup for the league itself. As SFist recently reported, the WNBA has been courting embarrassment in recent weeks over a failure to secure suitable venues and start times for Atlanta's home games. Suffice it to say, a home court celebration at Ballhalla following the first Game 7 in WNBA Finals history was easily the league's best-case scenario. It also fulfilled a promise by Valkyries owner Joe Lacob, who said back in 2023 that his team would win a title within five years. Speaking with press after last night's triumph, Lacob heaped praise on the three women central to the Valkyries operations: head coach Natalie Nakase, general manager Ohemaa Nyanin, and president Jess Smith.“I want to give the credit to those three women because — I give myself credit for hiring them — but other than that, they did it,” Lacob said, per the Chronicle. “And they were all spectacular at their jobs and deserve all the credit in the world.”Now comes the best part: a parade.Per ABC7, the celebration will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 4. It will start at the Ferry Building at noon, then travel along the Embarcadero until it ends at King and 2nd. Fans are allowed to arrive and stake their spot along the route starting at 9 a.m. Get ready to call in sick one more time. Related: Valkyries Fans Infuriated By Morning Tipoff For Game 6 on Thursday
