Mom Left Furious in Viral Video After Diner Employee Dumps Daughter’s Stuffed Animals in Trash

A Black mother is airing her outrage on Instagram over a distressing incident at a Philadelphia diner.
The woman, who goes by Kumba online, said a white Silk City Diner employee threw her wallet, car keys, and her 5-year-old daughter’s stuffed animals in the trash while they were in the restroo
m, leaving her “in tears and shaking.”
Though Kumba described the race of the diner staff involved, she did not explicitly say race was a factor in her October 27 Reel.

As a regular customer, she noted the server was especially slow, but she chalked it up to it being a diner.
While waiting for her check, she and her daughter went to the restroom for what she estimated was three to four minutes, leaving her daughter’s stuffies, her wallet, jacket, and keys behind. But when they returned, the server had completely cleared the table.
Trying not to panic, she asked a white bartender where her belongings were. She recalled, “He’s like, ‘Oh, they may have gone in the trash.’” She added, “At this point, I’m laughing.”

But it wasn’t a joke. The bartender dug through the garbage and pulled out her daughter’s toys, now smothered in sauce, along with her other items. Meanwhile, she said she hadn’t closed out her check.
Then, Kumba said, a nearby customer dropped a bombshell. “The table in front of me is like, ‘Actually, we saw it happen. As soon as you got up to go to the bathroom, he took her stuffed animals and wiped the table down with them.’”
Kumba asked for the manager but said the bartender gave her the runaround.
A man she believed was the diner’s owner, also white, disappeared into the kitchen after hearing about the incident. After waiting another ten minutes, a manager she described as Latino came out and responded to her concerns “very nonchalantly.”
To add insult to injury, the bartender returned and lectured her about being more “conscious” of what she leaves at the table, telling her, “75 percent of my job is throwing stuff out.”
But Kumba told her viewers, “It seemed almost deliberate,” adding that she had never interacted with him during the meal.
She said: “I am typically not someone who will make a video, go live…but never in my life have I been treated like that.”
Hundreds of commenters tagged Silk City, outraged on her behalf, with some saying they believed race did play a role.
On Oct. 28, Silk City posted an apology on Instagram calling what happened “unacceptable” and saying the person involved is “no longer employed.”
“We take our responsibility to our guests seriously, and the conduct shown in this incident falls short of the standards we expect from anyone representing our business,” the statement read. They added, “We know that words alone are not enough. We understand that rebuilding trust takes accountability and action.”
Kumba has not shared an update on whether the restaurant comped her meal or reimbursed her for the damaged items.
