U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut has been hospitalized after suffering a stroke, according to his chief of staff. Murphy started experiencing numbness in his arm while at his son’s hockey game Saturday, his chief of staff said in a statement. He was taken to a local hospital, where doctors determined he had suffered a stroke. Murphy was transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring and is responding well to treatment. “The doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery,” the statement said in part. Murphy has served in the U.S. Senate since 2013. Several lawmakers have released statements after Sen. Murphy’s hospitalization: Gov. Ned Lamont: “Just two days ago, I was with Senator Chris Murphy doing what he loves most: encouraging Connecticut residents to make their voices heard and vote on Tuesday. There is no stronger advocate for our democracy, and no one who fights harder for the people of this state. Chris is a great friend to Connecticut and to me personally, and Annie and I are keeping him and his family in our prayers. I am sure that he will be walking across the state again very soon, and we will all be cheering him on.” Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz: “I was with Senator Murphy on Friday evening, where he was energetically encouraging voters to participate in the upcoming election. I am glad to hear that he is doing well, and I look forward to continuing our joint efforts to support the people of Connecticut. We are all wishing Chris a speedy recovery and keeping him in our thoughts and prayers.” Sen. Ryan Fazio: “I am keeping Sen. Murphy and his family in my prayers during this challenging moment and wish him a full and speedy recovery.” Roberto Alves, Chairman of the Connecticut Democratic Party: “We were surprised by the news of Senator Chris Murphy’s hospitalization and relieved to hear that he is doing well. The Senator is a workhorse, tirelessly campaigning for Democratic candidates here and across the country. We wish Chris a full, speedy recovery and return to work.” Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam: “Senator Chris Murphy has, and will continue to be, an unwavering champion and fighter for our working-class residents and families. I am heartened to hear that he is expected to make a full recovery, and our community is standing with Chris and his family during this time.” This is a developing story. ...read more read less
