RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Richmond's Church Hill neighborhood held its first-ever BooFest on Broad this Halloween, closing part of East Broad Street to create a safer trick-or-treating experience.
East Broad Street closed between North 29th and North 32nd streets from 4 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3
1, for the all-volunteer effort organized by a grassroots group of neighbors. The goal is to make this popular trick-or-treating corridor safer for pedestrians of all ages.
"I hope y'all have fun, and [that] we all come back out here," said one Petersburg girl, who brought her brother out for trick-or-treating. "It is very safe for kids and adults as well."
The funds raised during the event will cover incidentals such as printing and candy stockpiles for neighbors in the closed zone, organizers said.

The city reportedly required fundraising to cover costs, including off-duty police officers, event insurance, traffic-control equipment rentals and application fees.
