“If right now you’re saying to yourself, ‘Didn’t I watch enough basketball on television last week without having to watch more of it on 60 Minutes?’, hold on. This story isn’t really about basketball …” That isn’t a line in 60 Minutes’ new feature on Victor Wembanyama; it’s the opening to the show’s story on David Robinson … all the way back in 1992. Before Wemby, The Admiral was the only Spur to get a profile on the iconic news program. Referring to The Admiral as “part Baryshnikov and part bull,” correspondent Ed Bradley highlighted Robinson’s decision to fulfill his two-year commitment to the Naval Academy, his community work in San Antonio, and his high standards rooted in his upbringing and Christian faith. Much of the segment focuses on Robinson as role model. The feature takes us into an elementary school classroom, where Robinson passionately speaks to fifth graders he’d pledged to help through college if they finished high school. He’d go on to launch Carver Academy, a charter school to help underserved children, in 2001. Robinson said, “If you can help a kid believe that he can do anything, he can.” Other highlights from the profile include an interview with his parents, a clip from his “Mister Robinson’s Neighborhood” commercial campaign, a heartbreaking “Spin the Bottle” story, and a fun back-and-forth about then-Coach Larry Brown’s colorful language.
