Taylor Swift Sent a Private Jet and $50k to Nelly for a ThreeMinute Performance, But the McDonald’s Bag She Used to Pay Him Steals the Show

Taylor Swift has a reputation for going all out for her friends. Nelly says he got the full treatment long before the Eras Tour made her the biggest act on the planet.
The “Hot in Herre” rapper says Swift once called him out of the blue, apologized for her small budget, then sent a private je
t and $50,000 in cash his way for a three-minute cameo.
Nelly, who has spent over a year fighting to win fans back, swore he would have done it for free.
Nelly says Taylor Swift flew him to Houston on a private jet and paid him $50,000 cash for a surprise 2011 cameo, but concert records don’t match every detail of his story. (Photo: @nelly/Instagram.)

Nelly told the story during a joint sit-down with his wife, Ashanti, on “The Breakfast Club.” There, the 51-year-old St. Louis hitmaker looked back on the 2011 Houston show where Swift flew him in for a surprise appearance, according to Us Weekly.
Nelly said he has known Swift, her father and her management for years. “I’m a Swiftie, hell yeah,” he declared, adding that she has popped out at his shows and even performed “Dilemma” with him.
The story started with a phone call. Nelly said Swift reached him late one night to say she and her friends had made up a routine to his 2002 smash “Hot in Herre” the night before. She wanted a “really big favor.” Have him fly to Houston and perform it at her “Speak Now” tour stop.
Swift was upfront about the money. Nelly said she told him she didn’t want to disrespect him, but she didn’t “really have a budget like that.” Instead, she offered to send her plane, book his room and pay him $50,000.
Nelly told her he would have done it for free. But he did have one request, and it would come back around at the end of the night.
According to him, a G5 jet scooped up Nelly and his kids in St. Louis and flew them to Texas. He hit the stage for roughly three minutes. Then a member of Swift’s team walked over and tossed him a bag.
It wasn’t an envelope or a briefcase. It was a McDonald’s bag with $50,000 in cash inside.
“Can you put that in a McDonald’s bag?” Nelly had asked during that first phone call, half-joking. Swift’s camp delivered. He never even used the presidential suite she booked, he said, because the jet took the family straight home after the show.
Here’s where the story gets complicated. Billboard noted that footage matching the timing and venue shows the pair performing his 2010 hit “Just a Dream,” not “Hot in Herre,” as seen on YouTube.
IBTimes UK also reported that Swift played one Houston date at Minute Maid Park on Nov. 5, 2011, in front of about 42,000 fans. Nelly remembered three or four nights and crowds of 56,000.
The dance routine he described sounds a lot like a different night entirely. In September 2015, Swift and the band HAIM busted out choreography as Nelly performed “Hot in Herre” during her “1989” tour stop in his hometown of St. Louis.
Most fans online were more charmed than skeptical. “She’s so real for this,” one person wrote. Another said this is how people who actually work with Swift talk about her, calling the hate online “bot central.”
A third agreed, writing that “everyone has nothing but positive things to say about her.” Others zeroed in on the unlikely friendship. “Sounds like the ultimate love triangle, pop, country, and a touchdown!” one fan joked, while another said Swift collects celebrity pals “like friendship bracelets.”
The touchdown part is no joke. Nelly and Ashanti were among the guests when Swift married Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce at New York’s Madison Square Garden on July 3. On “The Breakfast Club,” Nelly said no one at the wedding had their phone.
The couple made the rounds to promote the second season of their Peacock reality series, “Nelly Ashanti: We Belong Together.”
The McDonald’s bag story is also landing awkwardly next to the rest of Nelly’s résumé. In January 2025, he faced a wave of backlash for performing at Donald Trump’s inaugural Liberty Ball, a gig he called “an honor” while insisting he wasn’t doing it for the money.
The outrage followed him onto the couple’s show, where Ashanti’s mother was visibly stunned to learn he’d agreed to it. In September, he took the stage again at the lavish New York wedding of Alina Habba, Trump’s former personal lawyer, with FBI Director Kash Patel among the guests.
Between Swift’s backstage cash, Trump’s inaugural ball and a MAGA lawyer’s wedding, Nelly has never been short on invitations. What fans keep wondering is why he keeps saying yes.
