Indianapolis Ballet brings Cinderella to the stage
INDIANAPOLIS — A familiar fairy tale returns to the stage this week as Indianapolis Ballet presents “Cinderella,” with elaborate sets, costumes and choreography, along with live music from the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.
William Rob
inson and Sage Simons, members of Indianapolis Ballet, play the stepsisters in the production. Asked whether the characters are evil, they replied, “Depends on who you ask, but we’ve got a little wicked side.”
The company has worked on the production for five weeks. It follows the traditional fairy tale, the dancers said, with choreography by Victoria Morgan and performances by students from the School of Indianapolis Ballet.
The production also features the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra.
“Oh, I think the addition of our company and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in the pit is a fairy tale in itself. So to see us doing a story that we all know and can relate to in some way is just a great way to start the winter season,” Simons said.
The dancers said the production stays close to the traditional, Disney-style version of the story, with some surprises.
“It’s pretty close to the traditional Disney fairytale-like production. There’s some twists in there that you’ll have to wait and see,” Robinson said.
Robinson and Simons also encouraged audiences to keep an open mind about the stepsisters.
“Don’t trust Cinderella, whatever she says about us,” Simons said.
“We’re really sweet. We promise,” Robinson said.
“Cinderella” runs Nov. 6-8 at Clues Memorial Hall. Tickets are available at IndyBallet.org.
