INDIANAPOLIS — President of the Indianapolis Fraternal Order of Police Rick Snyder has announced he will not seek reelection. The announcement came in a media release sent Friday morning. Snyder, who has served as the FOP president for 12 years, has been outspoken in his criticism of M arion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears and the county’s handling of youth gun violence, among many other subjects. He has also led past and current efforts to “create and improve existing laws related to law enforcement practices, police training, policy improvements, the overall criminal justice system, public safety, officer wellness, and victim protections,” according to Indy FOP. Nominations for the next chapter president will be held in November. In his statement, Snyder noted his belief in developing future leaders and endorsed chapter Vice President Bobby Ferguson to step into the role. “Bobby can keep the momentum going at this critical juncture for our combined law enforcement agencies throughout Marion County…we can’t lose ground, and he’s ready,” said Snyder. Snyder also says he does not plan to completely step away from law enforcement, stating he hopes to act as a mentor for the next chapter president during the transition, “while remaining focused on legislative priorities for his fellow officers throughout Indiana at the statehouse and through ongoing federal provisions before Congress.” “There’s more work to do. Some might say we’re just getting started,” Snyder said. Snyder was the longest-serving president of Indy FOP since its founding in 1938. He also actively serves as the National FOP Chaplin. ...read more read less
