Steven Brill believes you can get instant in-depth information that’s also true in the new AI age. Not only that — he believes that can happen by working with and supporting true news outlets rather than stealing their stories and mixing them up with “pink-slime” slop. Brill’s b et takes the form of a new chatbot created by his save-reliable-news organization called NewsGuard. It’s his latest effort to battle bots to rescue truth in the AI age. His new NewsGuard AI chatbot draws on 12,000+ news outlets (including the Independent) that his organization has vetted for being true fact-based professionals, as opposed to sites masquerading as news while doing the work of advocacy groups, scammers or foreign government operatives. Intentionally deceptive “pink slime” pretend sites now outnumber real news sites, according to NewsGuard research, and therefore skew the results you find when posting questions to leading chatbots. The chatbot works like, say, Gemini or Claude: You ask it a question. It gives you a detailed summary, links to more information, and options for deeper exploration. The difference: You can count on the information being true. NewsGuard reports that its testers found that other AI models “repeat false claims about controversial topics 35 percent of the time in part because disinformation networks have deliberately seeded the open internet with false and misleading content that models may train on.” Another difference: NewsGuard not only has permission to crawl the 12,000+ real news sources on which it bases its information. It shares whatever money it makes on the chatbot with the news outlets themselves. With the NewsGuard AI chatbot, Brill is making a bet: That tech advances can work to the benefit of the public and the news industry rather than exploiting it for private gain in a way that destroys truth and the ability for informed public debate. Brill has made such bets before in more than four decades as a leading news industry innovator and leader. (He also teaches at Yale.) He revolutionized legal journalism when he started the American Lawyer magazine and its local affiliates, applying smart independent scrutiny to an insular profession vital to American democracy (including examining powerful private firms). He created Court TV, bringing transparency to the judicial process. He launched NewsGuard to combat the collapse of public trust in the news by vetting news organizations with a rating about their reliability; click here for a previous article about that. The AI chatbot is the latest development in that effort.  The New Haven Independent is pleased to become part of this experiment. Our articles will be among those used in the NewsGuard AI chatbot’s answers to public’s questions. People who sign up for the chatbot can also use it for more in-depth research and to test the reliability of sources of information. If you’d like to try it out, NewsGuard is offering a free trial for Indy readers; you can click here if you’d like to check it out. (Note: The Independent does not take a cut from people signing up to subscribe to the chatbot.) https://www.newsguard.ai/campaign/new-haven-independent The post Move Over Claude Gemini appeared first on New Haven Independent. ...read more read less
