INDIANAPOLIS–A man has been convicted of murder in the April 2025 shooting death of Forrest Grant on Indianapolis’ near southwest side. A jury found Donnie Abney guilty of murder and unlawful carrying of a handgun following a three-day trial. Jurors deliberated for three hours before reaching their verdict, Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears announced. The shooting happened on the afternoon of April 17, 2025, when Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers found Grant with a gunshot wound outside a tobacco store near a bus stop. Witnesses testified that Abney and his father argued with Grant outside the store. During the confrontation, Abney pulled out a handgun multiple times before firing a shot that struck Grant in the torso, according to the prosecutor’s office. While on the run after the shooting, Abney contacted several people he knew and admitted to shooting Grant, prosecutors said. Witness testimony was supported by surveillance cameras and video footage from nearby businesses. “This is yet another tragic example of a young person with a gun who is unequipped to handle a brief dispute, resulting in life-altering consequences for everyone involved,” Mears said. The court will determine whether Abney faces an additional sentencing enhancement for using a firearm in the crime. Abney’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for Dec. 3 at 10:30 a.m. ...read more read less
