NOAA’s Winter Outlook: A Warmer, Wetter Season Could Be Ahead for the Carolinas
Oct 29, 2026
Winter is right around the corner, and we’re getting our first look at what Mother Nature may have in store for the Carolinas. NOAA has released its seasonal outlook, and while we could be reaching for our umbrellas a little more often, those heavy winter coats may not get quite as much use.
So,
what’s driving this forecast? A lot of it comes down to El Niño.
This weather pattern develops when ocean temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific become warmer than usual. Those changes can influence weather patterns thousands of miles away, including here in the Carolinas. During the winter months, El Niño often strengthens the jet stream across the southern United States, helping steer more storm systems our way.
For Charlotte Metro and surrounding communities, that could mean more opportunities for rain between December and February. NOAA is also leaning toward temperatures running above seasonal averages across much of the eastern United States, including the Carolinas.
There’s some encouraging news in all of this. Additional rainfall could help ease drought conditions that have developed across portions of the Southeast.
Now, let’s talk about the question everyone wants answered. What about snow?
Here’s the thing. A warmer seasonal outlook doesn’t mean we can completely rule out snow. It only takes one storm and a good supply of cold air to bring winter weather into the region. Getting those ingredients to come together is always the hard part.
It’s also important to remember that NOAA’s seasonal outlook gives us a look at the bigger picture. It doesn’t tell us exactly how many snowstorms we’ll see.
The bottom line? We may be looking at a milder, more active winter across the Carolinas, but don’t count out a few cold surprises along the way.
The WeatherWise team will be tracking the changing weather patterns throughout the season!
