SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- The Golden State Valkyries are preparing for Game 6 of the WNBA Finals, but an unexpected schedule change is forcing Bay Area fans and businesses to adjust their plans. The game, originally scheduled for 5 p.m. Thursday, was moved to 9:30 a.m. because of a scheduling conflic t at State Farm Arena in Atlanta, where the Atlanta Dream are hosting the game. The early start has frustrated some fans who say the change could make it difficult for people to watch a potentially championship-clinching game during the work and school day. “It's really embarrassing for the league, and they shouldn't do this to hurt their product,” one fan said. The schedule change has also affected local businesses preparing to welcome fans for the game. Rikki's Women's Sports Bar, which typically opens at 3 p.m. on Thursdays, is moving up its opening time to 8:30 a.m. and adjusting its menu to accommodate the morning crowd. “It was a scramble for sure,” said Sara Yergovich, one of the bar's owners. The revised menu will include breakfast favorites such as waffles, breakfast sandwiches, biscuits and gravy, along with vegan and vegetarian options. Yergovich said the early start is disappointing, particularly for fans in Atlanta who may have to work and miss the game, as well as West Coast fans hoping to watch the Valkyries make history. “I don't know what contingency plans the team and the W had before this,” Yergovich said. “All I know is that the game being this early on a weekday is upsetting. It's upsetting, I'm sure, for fans in Atlanta that have to work who can't see their own team play in a really important game. And it's sad for us on the West Coast.” Despite the frustration, fans are making plans to support the Valkyries as they pursue a championship in just their second season. Bunnie Contreras stopped by Rikki's on Wednesday night to watch a replay of Game 5 and said the team represents something bigger than basketball. “As a local San Franciscan and as a member of the gay community, I think they're very important to us, and they're a wonderful example of women power and what we can do to excel in sports,” Contreras said. She's planning to be up early Thursday to cheer on the team. She has already reserved a table and coordinated with friends to watch the game. “I reserved a table, I got my friends together and made sure that I had that vacation approved in advance,” Contreras said. Across the bay, the Oakland Athletic Club is also preparing to open early for fans. Although the bar does not focus exclusively on women's sports, a representative said the Valkyries' run is worth celebrating. “It's nice to see a Bay Area team go all the way. That's the way I feel about it. Women's, men's, it's nice to see them doing their thing,” the representative said. Fans can also watch Game 6 at an official watch party at Thrive City outside Chase Center in San Francisco. ...read more read less
