Park City Mountain Resort has earned silver certification through the Park City | Summit County Green Business Program. It’s the only area ski resort to be certified through the updated program. Park City Mountain has participated in the Green Business Program for several years and has worked to incorporate sustainability into its operations through various Park City initiatives, as well as through Vail Resorts’ Commitment to Zero by 2030. Through its participation in the Elektron Solar Project, Park City Mountain sources 100% renewable electricity through the local Rocky Mountain Power grid. The project brings together Park City Mountain and other Utah organizations to support renewable energy generation on a larger scale. The resort also uses on-site solar to power select lift and patrol facilities, along with a solar hot-water system at Mid-Mountain Lodge. Additional initiatives include investing in more efficient snowmaking technology and promoting alternative transportation for employees through supporting local transit, employee shuttles, vanpool programs and carpooling incentives. Park City Mountain also provides annual waste-sorting training to employees across multiple departments and has staff at waste stations in its lodges who work to ensure recycling, food waste and trash are placed in the correct containers, the company said. For its future sustainable projects, Park City Mountain said it is looking to pilot renewable diesel, advance electrification projects, expand recycling for hard-to-recycle items such as ski gear, uniforms and snack wrappers, and identify new ways to reduce waste sent to the landfill. “Sustainability at Park City Mountain means looking for ways to reduce our impact across a large and complex operation,” said Erin Fulmore, sustainability coordinator at Park City Mountain Resort. “We’ve made progress in areas ranging from waste and snowmaking to renewable energy, and Green Business certification is a great way to recognize that work while keeping us focused on what comes next. We’re proud to have reached silver certification and to continue building on the work we’ve already started.” “We’re so excited to see Park City Mountain reach this milestone and continue to be part of our local program,” said Emily Newcomer, green business program coordinator. “A ski resort is obviously a very different operation than a restaurant, an office or a small retail business, but the idea is the same: Build on what you’re already doing, find opportunities that make sense for your business and keep moving forward. That’s really what the Green Business Program is about.” Businesses interested in becoming certified can learn more and get started at parkcitygreen.org or contact [email protected].
