RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Prosecutors say the student who was shot during Virginia Union University's (VUU) homecoming weekend was defending his girlfriend from a man who hit her in the face. On Tuesday, Oct. 27, a Richmond judge denied bail for 22-year-old Avantae Brooks, who is accused of attemptin g to kill a VUU student during the university's homecoming weekend, according to Senior Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Joshua Boyles. At about 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, officers with the Richmond Police Department (RPD) were called to the 1500 block of North Lombardy Street on VUU’s campus for reports of a shooting. Once there, officers found the student -- a 20-year-old man -- in front of the university's Henderson Center. He had been shot in the back. The student was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries, which were not considered life-threatening. Later, Brooks took himself to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound. During Tuesday's court proceedings, Boyle laid out the events that are believed to have preceded this shooting. He said an argument broke out between several people after VUU's homecoming game. The victim's girlfriend told investigators that, at some point during this argument, Brooks hit her in the face. She said her boyfriend then confronted Brooks and, during a struggle, Brooks shot him. It's believed Brooks also accidentally shot himself in the thigh. Both an empty holster and a Glock handgun were recovered from Brooks during the investigation, Boyles said. Brooks is facing two charges: attempted second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is next scheduled to appear in court in December. Police continue to investigate this shooting. Anyone with information is asked to contact RPD at 804-646-7570 or Crime Stoppers at 804-780-1000. This incident comes five days after another shooting at VUU that sent one man to the hospital and prompted the campus to go into lockdown. This is a developing story.
