CHARLOTTE, N.C. – An unlicensed teen driver is accused in a deadly hit and run crash that killed a little girl who had just got off the school bus. Police say 17-year-old LaChevis Finnie had a learner’s permit behind the wheel of a grey Mercedes when he hit 6-year-old Maria Segoviano Friday a fternoon. “That actually breaks my heart because she was just coming home from school and she was on the bus with my daughter,” Deniziah Hall who lives in the area said. “Like that could have been anybody’s kid, including mine.” Community members set up a memorial of balloons and flowers at the corner of Barrington and Lanecrest Drive where Segoviano was hit and killed. She was a student at Devonshire Elementary School. Segoviano’s tragic death is exposing what some neighbors say is a speeding and traffic problem in the area. “I see people speeding all up and down the street,” Hall said. “Kids be walking by they selves all the time. I don’t think it’s safe.” Some parents would like to see the city install some sort of traffic calming device like speed bumps. “There’s a school right there, maybe the school crosswalk that they usually have within a certain amount of distance from the school, that would definitely be helpful and maybe even one of those, uh, pedestrian crosswalk lights,” Chanelle Alvarez, who lives in neighborhood said. While the community grieves the loss of the child, some neighbors say they hope to see safer streets so this doesn’t happen again. “We like to walk, but we drive to a different neighborhood to take our walks, so we’re just gonna keep doing that,” Alvarez said. JD Mazuera Arias represents the area of East Charlotte where Segoviano was killed. During the city council meeting Monday night he spoke about action he wants to take. “We should recommit our commitment to Vision Zero and have a further policy discussion about reducing the speed limit in the City of Charlotte,” Mazuera Arias said. Finne is charged with felony hit and run. He’s scheduled to appear in court Tuesday morning for his first appearance. There’s a gofundme set up for funeral expenses for the young girl. ...read more read less
