Wasatch County Clerk-Auditor Joey Granger expects to receive thousands of ballots by mail or dropbox by Election Day. In-person voting will run until 8 p.m. on Nov. 3 at the Wasatch County Administration building, and preparation is essential to ensuring a smooth process.   That includes compl eting public logic and accuracy testing on voting equipment, essentially a “test election,” which Granger and members of the Clerk-Auditor’s Office performed on Oct. 19. Granger said a test deck of ballots is marked with an expected outcome to make sure the machines are producing accurate results.  The Clerk-Auditor’s Office looks for things that cause the machine to question a mark or double votes. That includes ballot creases and similar imperfections.  Clerk-Auditor’s Office staff personally review ballots that are determined unreadable. Every step in the process requires two people, including collecting ballots from drop boxes and signing off on reports.  Ballots were mailed to voters about three weeks before an election — this year, that was Oct. 13 — and every ballot envelope is marked with a unique identification number. The Clerk-Auditor’s Office collects and processes ballots by matching the signature against past signatures and scanning the barcode. Then, the ballots are inserted into the voting equipment.  The steps involved, from the logic and accuracy test to two-person tasks, are in place to promote election integrity and security.  Granger said Wasatch County voters should feel confident in the general election.  “Everything tested great, and we are set up to start processing,” Granger said.  The Clerk-Auditor’s Office has received 3,129 ballots as of Monday morning. More people delivered ballots through drop box locations than by mail, where only 932 ballots were postmarked and delivered by Monday.  Early in-person voting begins Tuesday in Wasatch County and runs until Friday. Voters can cast ballots from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Wasatch County Administration Building.  The Oct. 23 voter registration deadline has passed, though voters who missed it may vote in person at an early voting location or on Election Day with two forms of identification. Proof of residency may be required if someone has recently moved.  Though Utah law previously allowed mail-in ballots to be postmarked the day before the election, the Clerk-Auditor’s Office must now receive ballots by 8 p.m. on Election Day. That’s the same for ballots returned by dropbox.  Voters must now opt in to receive a ballot by mail, and information on how to opt in is included on an insert with mail-in ballots. The state Legislature amended the law to make mail-in ballots no longer automatic. After they have opted in and as long as voters continue to participate in election cycles, they’ll continue to receive mail-in ballots.  The November ballot includes six county-level positions, including county attorney, clerk-auditor, County Council seats A, C and F, and Wasatch County sheriff.  Two nonpartisan school board seats are also up for election: Seat C and Seat D. Though, those races are not contested.  Preliminary ballot counts are released in the days following the election, and the earliest results are released around 9 p.m. on election night. The Wasatch County Council will meet as a canvass to certify results about two weeks after Election Day.  Voters can sign up to receive status notifications for their ballot using BallotTrax: trackmyballot.utah.gov/voter. The Wasatch County Administration Building is the county’s only in-person voting location.  Ballot drop boxes are located at: Charleston Town Hall at 3454 W 3400 S, Charleston. Hideout Town Hall at 10860 N Hideout Trail, Hideout. Wasatch County Administration Building at 25 N Main Street, Heber City. Wasatch County Library at 465 E 1200 S, Heber City. Midway City Hall at 75 N 100 W, Midway. Wallsburg Town Hall at 70 W Main Canyon Road, Wallsburg.
