Homecoming attendee describes ‘scary moment’ following shots fired on VUU’s campus
Oct 25, 2026
RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- A shooting at Virginia Union University (VUU) last night that left two people with non-life-threatening injuries is just the latest in a string of incidents at the school.
At 8:33 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, Richmond Police Department (RPD) responded to a reported shooting on
the 1500 block of North Lombardy Street on VUU's campus.
On scene, officers found a man with an apparent gunshot wound, who was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Later, another man self-transported to the hospital with a gunshot wound. He also had non-life-threatening injuries.
Just after 9 p.m., alerts were sent out to students informing them of a lockdown.
“My and my friends were dancing, and then people were running, they were saying there’s a shooting, someone got shot," said Jamonthan Thompson, a Henrico High School student who was visiting friends and family for VUU's homecoming.
This incident follows another shooting that occurred five days ago on VUU's campus, which sent one man to a hospital. Additionally, at the beginning of the month, a student overheard a man making threats to shoot up a football game and he was charged with a bomb threat.
Thompson said this isn't deterring him from considering attending VUU next year.
“You can’t badmouth a school by, you know, what happened in the past or something. It’s always a great school," Thompson said. "It was like a very scary moment. I’m glad they’re ok. I’m praying for their family, hoping they pull through.”
VUU has said it is fully cooperating with law enforcement as the investigation continues, but has not commented on the earlier threats. 8News is waiting to hear back from police.
Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Major Crimes Detective James Higgins at (804) 646-7570 or call Crime Stoppers at (804) 780-1000.
