The California Highway Patrol Solano Area is investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred early Sunday morning on westbound Interstate 80. At approximately 12:49 a.m., the Golden Gate Communications Center received reports of a large obstruction — initially described as a large animal o r a possible body — blocking the Nos. 3 and 4 lanes of westbound I-80, just east of the Cordelia Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Facility scales, according to the CHP. Solano Area units responded, initiating a traffic break, and arrived at the scene at approximately 12:55 a.m. Officers located an unidentified female in the roadway with obvious signs of death. All westbound lanes were temporarily stopped. Following an initial investigation, the No. 1 lane was reopened at 3:38 a.m. Investigators determined that a 59-year-old male resident of Oakley was driving a 2015 Peterbilt truck and semi-trailer. The truck merged onto westbound I-80 from westbound state Route 12 (Rio Vista) when his vehicle struck the pedestrian located in the No. 6 lane. Believing he had hit a large box and experiencing radiator damage, the truck driver pulled into the westbound scales. Solano units responded to the scales location and recovered physical evidence linking the truck to the crash. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be a factor for the truck driver. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to formally identify the pedestrian. Anyone with information regarding this crash is encouraged to contact the CHP Solano Area office. The CHP Solano Area extends its sincere condolences to everyone affected by this tragic loss. ...read more read less
