Carlsbad working to stabilize bluff and preserve Coast Highway

The City of Carlsbad worked to stabilize the bluff on South Carlsbad Boulevard, between Solamar Drive and Island Way, following a geotechnical report that recommended emergency stabilization measures.
The city declared a state of emergency to expedite work on the project.
In June, a city inspe
ction on the boulevard (also known as Coast Highway and Pacific Coast Highway) revealed cracks in the pavement on the shoulder and bike lane, as well as moisture in the pavement. The road sits on western edge of the bluff, very near to the ocean water.
A subsequent geotechnical report recommended an emergency stabilization measures and extending the existing rock wall for increased bluff protection.
In September, work on the project began. 2-6 ton boulders were brought in and dropped on the beach. Now, two excavators are moving those boulders to reinforce and extend the rock wall.
Boulders will be placed from the northern end of the existing rock wall and extend approximately 192 feet north. The existing rock wall is 1,270 feet long, when finished the new rock wall will provide nearly 1,500 feet or protection from rising ocean waters.
Local residents NBC 7 spoke with were thankful the city of Carlsbad acted to save the bluff and the road, but were divided on the projects effectiveness.
“Oh, I think it can be stopped or at least stabilized” said Luis Lopez.
While Amy Kelts said, “No, I don’t think it will work. I think nature will take its course.”
The city is doing other inspections, monitoring and protection projects in its coastal areas to brace for potential damages from what is expected to be a strong El Nino season.
